A vision-language model (VLM) connects image understanding with language tasks. It may describe a photo, read text in a screenshot, compare visual elements or answer questions about a chart. Some systems process images and text jointly, while others combine a vision encoder with a language model.
A VLM can read a dashboard screenshot, describe a chart's trend or extract text from a photographed form. Treat numbers read from images with care: a misread digit looks as confident as a correct one. For forms and invoices, a dedicated text extraction step plus a check on totals can be more reliable than relying on the model alone, and the results can feed an AI automation workflow.
VLMs can miss small details, misread diagrams or confidently infer objects that are not present. Verify outputs for high-impact decisions and provide clear images or crops when precise visual detail matters. Related: Multimodal AI, Structured Output.
