Speech Recognition

Updated Oct 17, 2026

In short

Technology that converts spoken audio into a text transcript or another representation of recognized speech.

Speech recognition systems identify words in an audio signal and turn them into text. Accuracy depends on microphone quality, accents, background noise, speaking speed, vocabulary and language support. Some systems produce timestamps or speaker labels as well as the transcript.

Common uses include voice commands, meeting notes, subtitles and call center analytics. Domain terms, product names and unusual accents are frequent trouble spots. Many tools let you add a custom vocabulary or choose a language setting, which can reduce errors on names and jargon. Speech input is one of the main inputs to multimodal AI systems.

For business workflows, check how the system handles names, numbers, punctuation and domain-specific terms. A transcript may need human review before it is used for legal, medical or other consequential records. Related: Speech-to-Text, Text-to-Speech.
