AI Tool Orchestration

Updated Oct 17, 2026

In short

The routing and sequencing of tool calls made by an AI system, including validation, error handling and result handoffs.

AI tool orchestration governs how tools work together during a task. It can decide which tool is available at each step, validate model-generated arguments, execute calls, handle failures and return results in a format the model can use. It is narrower than managing every part of an agent, but often forms its execution backbone.

Imagine a research assistant with search, fetch and summarize tools. Orchestration decides the order, checks that a URL argument is well formed before fetching, retries a timed-out call once with retry logic, and passes only the needed text to the summarizer. For actions such as sending money or deleting records, add a human-in-the-loop approval step before execution.

Keep orchestration rules explicit for sensitive operations. A model proposing an action should not bypass authorization, input validation or human approval. Related: Tool Calling, AI Agent Orchestration.
