AI Benchmark

Updated Oct 17, 2026

In short

A defined test or collection of tests used to compare AI models or systems on specified tasks and evaluation criteria.

An AI benchmark provides a repeatable way to compare systems on a set of tasks. Results may cover accuracy, reasoning, coding, safety, speed or other measures. Benchmarks are useful for narrowing options, but their value depends on whether the tasks represent the work a developer actually needs to do.

Benchmarks are useful for a first shortlist but weak for final decisions. A model strong at math puzzles may not write good support replies, and a high score on a public test set can be inflated if similar questions appeared in training data. Pick or build a benchmark that resembles your task, and record the date, since model rankings change quickly. Compare candidate foundation models this way.

Check the test design, scoring method, date, model settings and possible data contamination before drawing conclusions. Run your own evaluation set as well, because a public leaderboard score may not predict performance in your application. Related: LLM Evaluation, AI Agent Evaluation.
