AI Agent Planning

Updated Oct 17, 2026

In short

The process an AI agent uses to break a goal into steps, choose an order and revise the plan when new information arrives.

Planning helps an agent tackle tasks that need more than one action. It may create a short checklist, identify dependencies, gather missing information and update its next step after a tool returns an unexpected result. Some systems plan once; others re-plan throughout execution.

For example, asked to prepare a weekly report, an agent might plan to pull the data, check for gaps, draft the summary and only then send it. If the data pull returns an empty table, a good agent revises the plan instead of drafting from nothing. Showing the plan to a person before execution is a cheap way to catch a wrong approach early.

Plans are proposals, not guarantees. Validate important steps, limit permitted actions and check whether the plan still fits the user’s goal before executing costly or irreversible operations. Related: AI Agent Orchestration, Human-in-the-Loop.
